Ventral / Incisional Hernia

The condition that occurs when an organ or adipose tissue in the abdomen tries to get out of any weak spot is called a hernia. Hernias can occur in any area of the abdominal wall.

The leading sign of abdominal wall hernias is swelling and accompanying pain. Both symptoms increase during coughing, straining, or heavy lifting.

The organ that tries to go out from the abdominal wall hernia is usually the small intestine. The large intestine, omentum and other organs can also be located in the hernia sac.

A special type of abdominal wall hernias is Incisional Hernia which develops at a previous surgery site. This type of hernia is more common, especially after gynecological diseases, colon diseases and previous hernia surgeries.

Today's gold standard in the treatment of abdominal wall hernias is laparoscopic repair using a mesh (synthetic material), if appropriate. Large hernias are usually operated by traditional open method, still using a mesh.
